Chapter 240: The Soul Eater Appears!

Chapter 240: The Soul Eater Appears!

Sanders stood face to face with the deadliest killer known to man. He understood that even the slightest movement could trigger an unpredictable fight.

However, he felt compelled to confront Sam. Sam had caused immense trouble for the military, leaving a trail of lifeless bodies in his wake.

"Sam, we don’t have to do this!" Sanders barked, hoping to defuse the tension. Surprisingly, Sam’s demeanor softened as soon as he heard Sanders’ plea. It was as if Sam wanted to test Sanders’ reaction to vulnerability.

"You’re right, we don’t have to," Sam responded. Sanders noticed that Sam’s mental stability seemed shaky, but he saw an opportunity to understand why Sam had committed his previous actions.

"Why did you kill those innocent people?" Sanders attempted to shift the conversation, watching Sam closely.

Sam raised an eyebrow, clearly puzzled by the accusation.

"Innocent people?" Sam questioned, his confusion evident.

"A trail of bodies? You’re mistaken. I never killed those people," he firmly stated. Sam had no reason to lie, knowing that Sanders was powerless to challenge the truth.

"What do you mean? Why were you always found near the crime scenes?" Sanders inquired, trying to maintain his composure. He understood that provoking Sam could end in his own demise.

"Because I, too, was following the trail of bodies," Sam clarified. Sanders was taken aback by this revelation, realizing that there had been a similar trail near their military base.

"Then why did my comrades meet the same fate?" Sanders asked, his voice steady.

He needed to uncover the truth without antagonizing Sam.

"I don’t know, maybe it seemed entertaining?" Sam replied, although his true intention was to lure out the person responsible. Unfortunately, it had only attracted trigger-happy soldiers instead.

"Well, none of that matters now," Sam declared, but Sanders couldn’t shake the feeling that someone else was pulling the strings behind these events.

"Sam, what was Alpha’s mission?" Sanders questioned, a sudden realization dawning upon him.

He recalled the mission they had embarked upon, the very same mission that Sam was recalled for before their base fell.

It remained unclear what Alpha team had encountered or if it was connected to these incidents. Sanders was determined to explore any possible connections.

However, before the conversation could continue, a deafening explosion rang out nearby, shaking the ground beneath them.

"I had hoped for more time, but it seems this place is about to crumble," Sam remarked calmly, despite the urgency of their situation.

They had to escape before the rubble could crush them, and Sam turned his back to Sanders.

Sanders began to realize that they had been pursuing the wrong target, and it didn’t seem like a deliberate plot to pit the military against Sam.

Sanders followed closely behind, still believing that Sam was their best chance at survival, but he wanted to uncover what Sam knew.

Sam had created a monster, but he would never create something he couldn’t destroy. Was Sam testing himself to see if he could handle an unforeseen threat?

Sanders started to understand why Sam evoked fear, but as long as he remained on Sam’s good side, there was nothing to fear.

They emerged from the cave, only to find the ground drenched in blood.

Sanders was horrified by the state of the bodies. They were mutilated beyond recognition, as if the creature cared more about destruction than feeding.

Sanders caught a glimpse of Sam’s face, and it was unlike the crazed expression he had grown accustomed to.

Sam appeared serious, understanding the gravity of the situation.

"You’re not the one who created this monster, are you?" Sanders began to comprehend the truth about Sam.

However, Sam remained too focused on their surroundings to pay him any attention.

A deafening growl reverberated, causing both of them to cover their ears to avoid damaging their eardrums. Sanders fell to his knees, but Sam stood firm.

Sam sighed, reaching down to pick up one of the weapons from the corpses.

What Sanders witnessed horrified him to the point of trembling.

"W-What is that!?" he blurted out.

Before them stood a grotesque creature with multiple heads and limbs.

Its skin appeared to be melting off, and the main head in the center was decayed to the point of being unrecognizable.

Sanders noticed the faces of the fallen soldiers embedded within the creature’s torso, moving their mouths as if pleading to be freed. It defied all reason.

"That thing isn’t just a zombie. It traps the souls of those it has killed," Sam responded, his tone stern.

While this idea seemed impractical, it was a belief held by Sam that wasn’t back by any evidence as he didn’t begin in the afterlife to begin with.

"I should have killed that man when I had the chance," Sam muttered to himself, showing no signs of fear or hesitation.

The weapon of choice he had selected were two daggers, a strange choice considering that there were guns to pick from.

Guns would have definitely been the practical choice but Sam was a skilled combatant that knew the weapon he choice would determine the outcome of the fight.

There had to be a reason he chose this weapon and while Sanders was terrified, he knew that Sam couldn’t take on this monster alone but he had two choices here.

Leave Sam and run, potentially saving himself and ending Sam once and for all.

Or support Sam and potentially earning his support along the line.

One thing Sanders had learned was that Sam was a terrifying man to have as an enemy but what kind of man would be as an ally?

This was also a good opportunity to see Sam’s true strength.

The zombie assimilated the features of everyone it had killed, although the method behind this remained unknown.

It appeared bloated, oozing a repugnant odor. The main head of the zombie was revealed to be the doctor Sam had tortured, but how it had come to be in this state was a mystery yet to be revealed.
