Chapter 148: I Am The Nexus!
Chapter 148: I Am The Nexus!
Sam had found a way to get rid of the zombies even though it came at the risk of a building.
He didn’t care because this was a small price to pay but something told him it wouldn’t be this easy.
Sam didn’t know what Delta meant by his earlier warning but it had to be something a lot more dangerous knowing Delta.
Sam could feel eyes on him but he didn’t know whose eyes they were, not that it mattered.
Sam chuckled before that laugh turned into a maniacal laugh, he couldn’t believe that this world came before him.
He could kill without reserve, if this wasn’t heaven on earth then what was?
"Delta, where the fuck are you? You better be," Sam showed concern for the first time.
But was this genuine or was it just him having some twisted sense of care?
Sam took his gun, pointed it into the sky and let loose a shot that echoed throughout the base.
"Now then, come at me you fuckers!" Sam said with a grin but what came at him was something he couldn’t have predicted.
It was a zombie but there was something strange about it, something familiar.
"Interesting," Sam said, his wounds were healed and he was ready to rumble but he didn’t know what kind of zombie this was.
The zombie was slender and it was a fresh corpse due to the lack of decay, it was almost like it was preserved.
The zombie just stared at him, it didn’t walk into the burning building but Sam was sure that it couldn’t see him.
Sam chuckled before pointing his gun right at that ugly thing but his face was bandaged except for his eyes, he was ready to blast a bullet right through its head but before he could pull the trigger.
He heard more growling noises behind him and he looked over his shoulder to see even more zombies behind him. They also had the same characteristics as the first zombie.
"The more the merrier," Sam boasted as he unsheathed a shotgun and pointed it at the two in the opposite direction.
The moment he blinked, the zombies were no longer in their initial position and Sam realized why, they were running right towards him.
"So this is what he meant..." Sam said, anyone in his shoes would be shaken to the core but all Sam did in this situation was smile.
He knew that the guns would be blocked with their hands but the destructive power of a shotgun would render this naught.
However, Sam didn’t want to end things soon and decided to drop the guns he was holding.
The moment he did, they were within striking distance.
Two lunged right at his head from the front with another reaching for his lower back from behind.
All Sam did was somersault backwards, over the crouching zombie that had reached for his lower back and the other two for his head.
This forced them to crash right into each other as Sam casually unsheathed both of his daggers simultaneously.
"Oh yeah, I’m going to enjoy this," Sam said with a grin and luckily for him, the zombies didn’t come at him all together this time around.
One came at him, reaching for his head but he noticed that these zombies were a lot slower than the one he had fought and weaker too.
Sam dodged the zombie’s attempt to grab his head by crouching before severing its legs.
The zombie fell to the ground incapacitated as it lost the one thing that made it dangerous which was its legs.
Sam was impressed because the other two zombies were already on him but Sam threw both his axes that impaled their heads perfectly.
They tried to use their respective hand to defend themselves but like Sam had noted earlier.
They were a lot slower than the one he had fought that say
He casually walked to where he dropped his guns and picked them up because why not?
He noticed he still had one more zombie to kill off but part of him wanted to leave it just for the fun of it however his curiosity set in.
He wanted to see why they were bandaged up and he loosened the bandage.
Sam’s facial expression didn’t change but his body language gave him away.
"Now this is nasty..." Sam muttered, their skull was cut open leaving the top part of their brain exposed.
The bandage was an attempt to keep it together.
The fact that the zombie was still functional even when reduced to this state was something to note.
Sam knew things were about to get serious as these corpses were tampered with.
"I see, it’s all adding up," Sam muttered under his breath as he got back to his feet.
"These running creatures, they were created by him... This means he is the one responsible for the base falling," Sam said.
He now had a solid reason to eliminate the man but he needed to find him first.
"That was quite entertaining..." A voice said on the walkie talkie but Sam didn’t recognize this face.
"You’re the doctor, I presume..." Sam suggested bluntly, he had no time to waste.
"Oh my, I’m honoured you know of me but this can only mean that you have met Anderson..." The doctor responded.
"I always hated conversing through one of these, how about you tell me where you are so we can have this conversation in person?" Sam asked.
"You’re right..." The doctor responded prompting Sam to raise a brow in confusion.
But before he could even speak into the walkie-talkie, a flare gun was fired into the skies.
"Follow that and you will find me but not just me, your little friend as well..." The doctor teased.
"Hahaha! Thank you, I will be sure to get you something on my way," Sam responded.
Little did either know how far both were willing to go to complete their objective.

Jason made the biggest decision of his life, he didn’t know what would happen after consuming the fragment but as long as he was self-aware, he didn’t mind it.
Jason’s knees buckled, and his body was overcome by something overwhelming, he felt like Hercules holding up the skies except he wasn’t nearly as strong as the Greek God.
"What the fuck is happening to me, Chronos!?" Jason asked but Chronos had few words for the man as the system’s voice seemed to be fading.
[You are evolvin-!]
Chronos didn’t complete his sentence as his voice faded into oblivion and Jason assumed this was because of the overwhelming pain his body was undergoing.
Jason needed to pick himself up or he would be ripped apart.
[Assimilation of fragment loading...!]
[Assimilation of fragment... 10%!]
[Assimilation of fragment... 20%!]
[Assimilation of fragment... 45%!]
[Assimilation of fragment... 75%!]
[Assimilation of fragment... 99%!]
[Assimilation complete!]
The moment Chronos said this, Jason’s body became as light as a feather, he didn’t know what it was that happened but he felt good.
He felt like he could do anything right now.
The zombie that was closest to him, Jason ripped its head off with a single slap, this showed that his physical abilities had been augmented.
Jason couldn’t believe the power he possessed, if it was with this power, there was no doubt that he could protect those he cared about.
Jason chuckled, he didn’t need to be so careful anymore because what could they do to him?
This was arrogance but Jason soon remembered Clementine and Franklin.
He clutched his head because this wasn’t him, Jason fell on one knee in visible pain.
This shouldn’t be happening considering he had assimilated the fragment but this fragment was part of Chronos.
Chronos was actively trying to wrestle Jason’s body from his control but Jason wasn’t giving in.
This was the first time Chronos had done this and everything that Chronos did until now was to ensure this very result.
He knew how Jason was right to his core and he knew that the guilt of taking a life and not feeling remorse would make Jason view himself as a threat to those around him.
Because what if he hurts Clementine, or worse, Rachel?
However, Chronos made one miscalculation, he underestimated Jason’s resolve to live.
Jason wasn’t going to hand over his body to some parasite because he knew that Chronos was far too dangerous to be left unchecked.
"This is my body...!" Jason said, slowly getting back to his feet.
"This is my mind...!" Jason muttered, punching himself right in the face.
"And you Chronos, you’re my tool!" Jason’s nose was bleeding but he didn’t care about this.
Jason had not only retained his consciousness but he had managed to somehow subdue Chronos. Jason was infected by the fragment and this meant that the fragment could be used by him rather than Chronos since Chronos was made up of the same material.
It allowed Jason to strip Chronos of its very essence and take control of it as it had just tried Jason.
[Congratulations! You have become the Nexus!]
[Stats increase +20!]
Except this notification didn’t come in the form of a voice but rather, a pop-up bar he could visibly see and a smile encompassed Jason’s face.
"I see..." Jason muttered but what did it mean to absorb the fragment and how would this affect life as he knew it?
