His Mistress is His Ex-Wife

Chapter 348: Truth vs Truth

Chapter 348: Truth vs Truth

The kiss didn’t last long as Dominique suddenly pulled back.

"I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have kissed you..."

He even stepped back, keeping his distance from her. If he stayed in her close proximity, he might lose control again and end up kissing her once more.

Dominique believed that he didn’t deserve to kiss her or touch her again. He committed a grave sin against her. He must draw a line between them so that his heart would no longer waver.

Meanwhile, Sabrina suddenly felt an emptiness in her heart when Dominique released her from his embrace. Her body seemed to yearn for his touch. It felt so wrong. But she couldn’t stop herself from having such feelings.

"You haven’t answered me yet. Are you alright? I heard from Gael that he saw you in the hospital." Sabrina insisted on getting an answer from him.

Dominique suddenly got worried upon hearing that. ’Did Gael learn something about my illness?’

"I’m okay. You have nothing to worry about. I just did my regular check-up. I’m healthy, not sick," he lied.

"Then how about the incident in Don Miguel’s villa... He said you lost control and stabbed the kidnapper. Aside from naming my uncle as the mastermind behind my abduction, what did he tell you that triggered your emotions?"

Dominique wasn’t ready for this confrontation. He didn’t know what he would tell her.

’I don’t have the courage to tell her I made a wrong decision... that I took revenge against an innocent man, her father. I just wanted to bury this secret in my grave. Besides, Sabrina has to live her life with a fresh start. The past doesn’t matter to her anymore.’

"Dom, please. Don’t avoid my question. What are you hiding from me?"

Dominique sighed deeply, staring at her.

"Sabrina... I asked to meet you here for another reason... Please, just stop asking me about the incident that happened in Don Miguel’s hideout."

She pursed her lips while clenching her fists. ’I knew it. He doesn’t want to talk about it because that man is related to his tragic past.’

In an instant, Sabrina’s expression turned gloomy, lowering her gaze. Still blaming her father for what happened to Dominique’s family, she couldn’t look him in the eyes.

"So... what do you want to tell me?" Sabrina asked in her low voice.

Dominique hesitated for a moment. Seeing her downcast look, he felt the urge to hug her again. But he refrained from doing so.

"I am here to tell you that you no longer need to fulfill my wishes. Just forget about our deal. I already signed our divorce papers." He paused for a moment, picking up the document on the coffee table.

"Here. You can take this now. Starting today... You are free, Sabrina. You can marry Vladimir and become his wife. You have no legal obligation to me now." He forced himself to smile, concealing his sorrow.

Sabrina didn’t know why but her body froze the moment those words entered her ears. She couldn’t bring herself to accept the folder. She just stood there, staring at the document in Dominique’s hand.

On the other hand, Dominique shifted his gaze to the floor, which is why he missed seeing the conflicting emotions in Sabrina’s eyes.

"That’s the only thing I want to say to you. I won’t keep you here for so long. You can take this now... and go home. I know you are busy with your wedding preparations."

He wanted to finish this talk as soon as possible. If Sabrina stayed longer in his apartment, he was afraid he might change his mind.

Sabrina felt the lump in her throat, fighting the urge to cry. She should feel happy because Dominique finally granted her freedom.

’But why? Why is it that my heart is being squeezed right now, that I can’t breathe?’

"Are you sure about this?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Yes, Sab... This is for you. My one last gift. I wish you all the happiness in the world."

Dominique tried his best to look calm and composed. He didn’t want to look pitiful in her eyes as he said his final goodbye to her.

"After this, I will no longer bother you. Please take good care of our son, Aaron. I know... Vladimir will do his best to be a good father to our son. You deserve him."

Sabrina stayed silent as she finally accepted the document.

’Why do his kind words sting a lot? I feel like crying... I should rejoice because he is truly letting me go. But why is it... I can’t smile... Why can’t I truly feel happy? This doesn’t make sense at all.’

"Thanks, Dom," that’s the only word she could utter.

There was a long moment of silence between them. No one spoke. No one looked at each other. They just stood there, avoiding each other’s eyes.

Once Sabrina stepped out of the house... then it only meant... they were finally ending the love they had in the past. No more turning back.

Clenching the document in her arm, Sabrina turned around, making her way to the door of Dominique’s apartment.

Meanwhile, Dominique just slammed his eyes shut, gritting his teeth as he listened to her footsteps drifting farther and farther away from him.

Sabrina finally reached the door. But instead of stepping out, she remained in her spot and blurted out.

"Do you hate me that much, Dom?"

Her sudden question confused him. He instinctively raised his head, looking in her direction.

"No! I don’t hate you, Sab. Why would I hate you?"

Sabrina’s back was on Dominique. She never dared look at him as she uttered another word.

"Dom, I already knew the truth..."

"What truth?" Dominique frowned.

"I finally understand where your hatred and resentment came from. I know... It’s my father’s fault. He was the one who murdered your family... He committed a grave sin, so I understand why you have to take your revenge against our family..."

Dominique panicked when he heard that. "Sabrina, No. You are wrong."

"You don’t need to cover it up for me, Dom..." She smiled bitterly, tears falling from the corners of her eyes. "I finally accepted it. I know... that man has something to do with your tragic past. I wanted to ask him in person why my father committed such a crime. I want to know my father–"

"No, Sab! Stop saying that. You don’t understand! You got it all wrong..." Dominique cut her off as he hugged her from behind.

"Your father is innocent... He has nothing to do with my family’s death," He tried to explain, yet Sabrina refused to believe him.

"You don’t need to lie, Dom, just to protect my father’s image in my eyes... I know the truth..." her voice cracked down.

Dominique turned her around to face him. "Listen, Sab... Believe me... Your father is innocent... I was the one who made a mistake. I directed my revenge at the wrong person. It was all your Uncle’s doing. The man already confessed. Alfonso impersonated your father the night they attacked my family. That’s why I mistook your father as the culprit..."

Sabrina: "..."
